Unfortunately, that hasn't been so easy for coaches to do - partly because there isn't a lot of truly masterful training going on, but also because if you don't know what masterful coaching is, how do you determine if what you are hearing is masterful?

My name is Nina East and I've been teaching coaching skills since 1986. I've taught and mentored thousands of coaches, and have listened to, literally, thousands of coaching sessions.

From the coaching sessions I've evaluated or certified, I've noticed several critical themes, or stumbling blocks.

- confusion about what coaching is, and is not
- how to ask questions that develop and uncover the source of what's going on, rather than leading the client toward what the coach thinks is going on
- trying to hard to be the "expert"
- and knowing when or how to interrupt appropriately.
